As you walk up the windy road opposite the Whitby Bridge and come out on Flowergate, you’ll soon see The Art Cafe Contemporary Gallery on your right. Unassuming from the street level, its bright gallery spaces stretch across three floors. The gallery states it aims to ‘create an atmosphere that is vibrant yet minimal, exciting yet relaxing.’ Indeed the spaces are flooded with light and invite to linger.
In intervals of six to eight weeks, the gallery exhibits work by a range of artists, not exclusively local. Its spring exhibition is a group show titled ‘…towards the light’.

During the lockdown, the gallery has been operating online sales of some of the work. It is also part of the Own Art scheme, which finances art purchases.
Although the café side of the business will remain closed due to COVID-19 regulations, the exhibition space is open again to the public from the week of 12th April onwards.
Exhibitions run all year around, opening usually Wednesday to Sunday. Exact opening times can be found on their website.
